Difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced Syllabus

Most of the topics in both exams are common, but if you look at the JEE Main and JEE Advanced curriculum, you will find that practical topics in physics and chemistry are included in the JEE Advanced curriculum. they are contained in JEE Main, but not in JEE Advanced and vice versa.

JEE Main Syllabus

  • The JEE Main Curriculum includes the physics, chemistry and math curriculum of CBSE grades 11 and 12.
  • Topics such as electronic devices, electromagnetic waves and communication systems are included. in main JEE, but not asked in Advanced JEE.
  • Similarly, some of the math topics such as sets, relationships and functions, statistics and probability, trigonometry, and math thinking are in the Main JEE but not in the Advanced JEE. In chemistry, topics such as biomolecules and chemistry in everyday life are included in the JEE core program, but not in the JEE advanced curriculum.
  • Test enforcement authority NTA has created the complete JEE Main 2021 program.

JEE Advanced Syllabus

  • In contrast to the core syllabus of JEE Main, the syllabus of JEE Advanced consists of some additional topics in addition to the curriculum of class 12th.
  • The syllabus of JEE does not contain some of the advanced JEE topics such as thermal physics in Advanced JEE but is not queried in the JEE Main Syllabus.
  • Similarly, electrochemistry is included in JEE Advanced, but not in JEE main.
  • Most of the questions in JEE Advanced are derived. While the questions in JEE Main are application based.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the syllabus of JEE Main Paper 1 and Paper 2 same??

JEE Main Paper 1 is conducted for admission to B.E./B. Tech while JEE Main Paper 2 is conducted for admission to B. Arch. Thus, the syllabus of paper 1 differs from paper 2. Paper 1 consists of questions from topics Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry whereas paper 2 consists of questions from topics Mathematics, Aptitude, and Drawing.

Will the topics asked in JEE Main Exam be as same as that of CBSE class 11th and 12th??

JEE Main Syllabus shows similarities when compared to the syllabus of class 11th and 12th. The concepts and topics discussed in JEE Main Exam are of higher difficulty level and candidates are required to be adept in problem solving skills as well as analyzing skills.

Is it important to know JEE Main Syllabus??

Though JEE Main Syllabus is very similar to that of CBSE class 11th and 12th, yet it is important for students to go through the syllabus at least once before they start preparing for the examination. Ignoring the syllabus is not advisable at all.

Now that NTA conducts JEE Main Exam, are there any changes in syllabus??

The JEE Main Syllabus is as same as that of previous years. There haven’t been any changes introduced in the syllabus.

How long does it take to cover JEE Main Syllabus??

Well, there is no definite answer as this totally depends on candidates’ caliber and their strategy to plan their studies. It is advisable to start studying as soon as possible. The syllabus is quite vast and it requires a significant amount of time to be invested in preparation. They must start preparing at least 1 year prior the commencement of examination. They should also reserve some time to be given to exam’s revision.

What are the topics that are in JEE Main Syllabus but JEE Advanced??

There are a few topics of JEE Main Exam that haven’t been included in the syllabus of JEE Advanced. These topics as environmental chemistry, semiconductor, communication system, mathematical reasoning etc.

Is there any reduction in JEE Main Syllabus 2024??

Since there was a reduction of 30% of syllabus in CBSE and other state board class 11th and 12th examinations, there were speculations made on JEE Main Syllabus reduction. Due to the variation in JEE Main Syllabus, NTA has introduced some changes in JEE Main Exam Pattern. Sections Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics will have 30 questions each.

Is H. C. Verma good enough to study Physics for JEE Main Exam??

If students complete part 1 and part 2 of H.C. Verma, they will be decently prepared for the examination. The exam focuses on basic concepts and their application and a book such as H. C. Verma stands useful in such cases. Practice from this book and take a few mock tests to analyze your weaknesses.
