Every year, lakhs of students appear for the exam and clear the exam. However, there also might be some students who are not able to clear the CBSE Class 12 board exam. CBSE therefore, mentions those candidates as ‘Essential Repeat’.

Essential Repeat is the term used for the students who have failed in 3 or more subjects in the CBSE Class 12 examination. As per the set criteria by CBSE, a student must score at least 33% marks in all of the subjects to be considered a pass. Therefore the term Essential Repeat is used to avoid using ‘Fail’ in the CBSE Result.

What is Essential Repeat in CBSE Result?

The term essential repeat specifically means that the students who failed to appear for the exam or have failed in 3 or more subjects have to re-appear for the exams. CBSE provides the essential repeat opportunity for failed students. The main objective here is to avoid using the term 'Fail'  in CBSE Class 12th Result and Marksheet.

The CBSE authorities will conduct the exams for all the compartment students who have been marked as essential repeat in their results. The students must score at least 33% marks in practical,  internal assessment, and the main exam to qualify for the exams and to be declared as 'Pass'. Students are given this opportunity to improve their scores and percentages through the compartment exams.

Difference Between Fail & Essential Repeat

There is no real difference between the terms Essential Repeat and Fail. The terms are used interchangeably and CBSE uses the essential repeat terminology for the students who cannot meet the basic pass criteria set by the board. The term Essential Repeat is used instead of Fail to avoid panic and chaos among the students.

Through these CBSE Class 12 supplementary or CBSE Class 12 Compartment Exams the students are given an opportunity to improve their scores and pass the CBSE Class 12th.
