IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) are India's most prestigious management institute. It is indeed a dream institute for many MBA aspirants in India, and candidates aim to grab a seat by cracking the CAT exam with good scores. Since the capacity of IIMs is limited, it becomes challenging for a lot of candidates to get admission into the IIMs. However, there are a lot of other reputed colleges with high-quality education and good placement opportunities that accept CAT scores.

What is CAT?

CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is a national-level entrance examination for admission into the top management institutes in India for MBA or PGDM programs. Every year, one of the many IIMs is responsible for conducting the CAT Exam rotationally.  

 

It is a computer-based online examination and the duration of the exam is 120 minutes. The exam is divided into three sections. These sections are:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension.
  • Quantitative Ability.
  • Logical Reasoning.

 

There are a total of 100 questions which are divided in the following manner:

Eligibility for CAT

To be eligible to appear for the CAT exam, candidates need to fulfill certain criteria. The important criteria for the exam are listed below:

  • Candidates who have scored a minimum of 50% in the Class X and Class XII Board Exam from a recognized board, are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% for the General category, and 45% for the SC, ST, and PWD categories from a recognized college or university can apply for CAT.
  • Also, candidates who are in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, who have completed the final examinations and are waiting for the results can apply. Once they get selected, they need to present an equivalent proof from the college to the CAT conducting authority for further procedure, until they receive the official Bachelor’s degree from the college.
  • The minimum cutoff score for the CAT needs to be cleared by the individual to be eligible to apply for the CAT exam.
  • There is no age limit to apply for the exam.
  • While it is not mandatory to have work experience, a lot of institutions prefer an individual with work experience.
