Who Administer and Develops SAT?

The College Board is the body responsible for the SAT test. It is a nonprofit organization found in the United States of America, established in 1900. The College Board is responsible for constructing and supervising a set of standardized tests aimed at assisting colleges in the decision process; among these tests is the SAT.

The organization provides assessment services and tools along with counseling to students, schools, and colleges to make the college entrance process easier. The SAT test is administered several times a year through designated test centers nationwide and around the world, giving students the flexibility to pick and choose a date and place that suits them best.

SAT Eligibility Criteria

Those who want to apply for the SAT, the College Board, which governs the SAT, has not set clear rules on SAT eligibility. Some of the general highlights are bulleted below:

  • No age restrictions are considered, but candidates from the age group of 17 to 19 are the majority that attends the SAT, as per studies.
  • There is no limit to the number of times an applicant can take the SAT. The SAT is administered five times a year in India.
  • Currently, most of the students wishing to pursue undergraduate studies abroad have learned through completing high school before advancing to the next step in their learning processes.

SAT Exam Format

To evaluate the understanding that a candidate should possess to be admitted & solve issues, SAT requires components with critical reading, mathematics & writing. Aspirants have to appear for the SAT II test in their chosen universities

Test of Reasoning (SAT- I)
It is a three-hour multiple-choice test designed to assess reasoning ability both verbally and mathematically. For most of the university's scoring, SAT-I is needed.

Subject Test (SAT-II)
It is a one-hour multiple choice test, which was used to assess knowledge of specific subjects and the ability to apply that knowledge. In addition to SAT-I, some colleges require this score also.

The SAT has been designed to focus on the application of information as much as on basic knowledge in the subjects. The students are tested in two broad sections: one is Evidence-Based Reading and Writing that includes both Reading and Writing & Language, while the other section is Math. Each section varies between 200 and 800. Thus, the cumulative score for the test ranges between 400 and 1600. The test typically lasts three hours but can last up to three hours and fifty minutes if students choose to take the essay section, which is actually optional. The format above ensures students' skills are adequately reflected as it, in the same instance gives the students a chance to score higher by taking the optional essay, which is graded separately.

SAT Full Form

SAT or Scholastic Assessment Test is considered as one of the main standardized tests for entry into the American university, and they also conduct this test in other countries like India. SATs are conducted five times in an academic year, namely March, May, August, October, and December in India. Thus they can take the test any number of times in a year, considering diverse academic calendars and personal study schedules.

Important Things to Remember

Adaptive Testing Schedule: The SAT has five test dates in a year, allowing students to choose the best date that fits their preparation schedule. This can be beneficial to students who need additional time to prepare or would want to retake the test to achieve further score improvement.

No Maximum Appearances: This is one of the salient features of the SAT in India. Even while seeking an application for the SAT, there is no such provision for a maximum number of appearances. It means that if a student wants to gain a certain score, he can appear for the SAT as many times as he wants to get it. This flexibility can then be used to reduce stress while instilling in the students a desire to do better rather than getting the highest grade in the first attempt.

Strategic Retakes: Since students appear in the SAT, they will get multiple chances to take the test thus making strategic decisions in rescheduling the reappearing sessions after giving their performances. If a candidate has given his/her all for an earlier session but feels that s/he may not have done his best, s/he would be happy to take another session since all the candidates get feedback in the next session regarding their strengths and weaknesses. For such a candidate who would need to improve in math part or reading section, strategic retakes will help them perform better there.

Preparation Opportunities: The vast scope of opportunities to test creates an impulse to spend extra time on preparation. Since analysis of the result is possible from the previous attempts, the students can concentrate on those areas in which they failed and modify their strategy accordingly to combat those weaknesses. In this fashion, the outcome may improve and scores increase over time.

Its impact on college admissions is that the opportunity to take the SAT multiple times helps improve college application processes. The fact that the admission committees tend to use the highest scores the student has attained, so that the student will always have the best possible score, opens up more scholarship opportunities and becomes a prime factor in acceptance process.

Fee and Cut Off Marks

The fee varies with sections of the SAT exam. For two sections of the SAT, the fee will be US $50 and for three sections of SAT with the essay section, the fee will be US $65. These fees have some additional charges above the US $45 for taking the exam outside the United States. Some fees apply on circumstances like late registration, standby testing, and changes in registration.

One among the required criteria to get admission is the cut off marks. There is no such official cut-off for the SAT examination. The minimum score any candidate gets is 400, and
the maximum is 1600. Admission to top universities or colleges requires a minimum of 1400 as the score.
