Vayalar Ravi is advancing the same cause in Kerala by establishing the "Kerala Students' Union." Smt. Indira Gandhi Ji, the Hon'ble Former Prime Minister, founded the National Students' Union of India in 1971 by combining KSU and WBCP after realizing the significant role the student community had played in fostering nationalism through the promotion of human rights, the empowerment of women, the preservation of democratic spaces, social justice, and freedom of speech.
The National Students' Union of India strives to protect the rights of the student body while developing the next generation of leaders. Additionally, NSUI seeks to develop a sense of nationalism in Indian youth while shaping them into aware citizens.

At the national level, the NSUI has the following administrative structures-
College beneficiaries are arranged according to the organizational institutes to which they belong at the most fundamental level of the NSUI system. Additionally, the college level office holders appoint the district or state level office holders. At the state, district, and college levels, committees are selected in an anonymous manner. A committee of distinguished state residents elects the national-level bearers, while the district elects the bearers.
Rahul Gandhi introduced an open membership procedure in 2007 to increase transparency within the NSUI. Members of NSUI are categorized into "Primary Members" and "Active Members." The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) is the student wing of the Indian National Congress, which is one of the major political parties in India. It is a national-level student organization that aims to represent and voice the concerns of students across the country.
The primary objectives of the National Students’ Union of India are to provide a platform for Indian students to express their views and opinions, to promote social and political awareness among students, to promote national integration and secularism, to work towards the overall development of students, and to represent the interests of Indian students at the national level.
To become a member of the National Students’ Union of India, one must be a student enrolled in a university or college in India. Membership forms are available at NSUI offices or can be obtained from the NSUI website. After filling out the form, the applicant must submit it to the NSUI office along with the membership fee.
The National Students’ Union of India has played an important role in shaping Indian politics and society. Some of its notable achievements include organizing student protests against the Emergency in 1975, demanding the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations in 1990, and leading a campaign for the Right to Education Act in 2009. The NSUI has also been instrumental in promoting gender equality, social justice, and environmental awareness among Indian students.

While other student organizations are politically independent, the NSUI is an integral part of the Congress party’s youth wing. This affiliation gives the NSUI access to the party’s resources and support, but it also means that the NSUI’s agenda and policies are aligned with those of the Congress party.
