However, NTA gives the option to challenge the answer key at INR 200/question, and the final JEE Mains Result is prepared by taking into consideration these challenges.
What is the JEE Main Percentile Score?
The NTA JEE Main Result and Rank are based on the Percentile Score obtained after the normalization process. JEE Main Percentile refers to the percentage of candidates who score less than or equal to the specific percentile in the exam.
As the official website states - "The Percentile Score indicates the percentage of candidates that have scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW (same or lower raw scores) that particular Percentile in that examination. Therefore the topper (highest score) of each session gets the same Percentile of 100 which is desirable. The marks obtained in between the highest and lowest scores are also converted to appropriate Percentiles”

JEE Mains Result Session 1: Difference between percentage and Percentile
While many candidates use the words percentage and percentile interchangeably, there is a huge difference between these two terms. The difference between both the terms is highlighted below.
Percentage | Percentile | Calculation |
A percentage is a number out of 100 | The percentile score of a candidate will reflect how many candidates have scored below that candidate in an exam. A Percentile score is a value below which a certain percentage of observations falls. | Percentage -> (Marks Obtained/ Total Marks) x 100 |
Percentile -> (Number of candidates in the session with aggregate marks less than that obtained by the candidate x 100) / Total number of candidates who appeared in that session |

JEE Mains Session 1 Result: Normalization Process
The JEE Main Exam is conducted in multiple sessions and shifts. While some shifts might have an easier-to-attempt test paper, few might be difficult. Thus, to ensure that neither the students are benefited nor disadvantaged, the JEE Main Normalization Process is used to adjust the scores to account for various levels of difficulty in the exam.
JEE Main Final Result
The JEE Main Final Result is declared after the conclusion of the second session. The JEE Main final result is arrived at by combining the JEE Main Session 1 Result and JEE Main Session 2 result. NTA merges the percentile score obtained in all the sessions and then assigns an All India Rank (AIR) to the candidates.
The JEE Mains final result entails the following details:
- Total scores obtained in JEE Main January/ April attempt
- The best of the two JEE Main scores, in the case of candidates who appear for both sessions
- JEE Main All India Rank 2024
- Category of the candidates
- JEE Main cut-off for JEE Advanced 2024

JEE Main Result: Rank List Preparation
The JEE Mains Result Rank List is prepared based on the percentile scores obtained in all the sessions and is released along with the JEE Main cutoff on the official website. The JEE Main Result Rank List preparation includes 4 steps, mentioned below:
- Distribution of Test-takers in 2 Sessions- June/ July: NTA ensures to equally divide the test-takers across both exam sessions to avoid bias in the distribution of candidates across the shifts and sessions.
- Preparation of JEE Main 2024 Raw Scores: Before the calculation of percentile scores, raw scores are calculated using the formula:
JEE Main Raw Score = 4 marks x number of correct answers - number of wrong answers x 1 |
- JEE Main Percentile Score Calculation: After the raw scores are prepared, the JEE Main Percentile Score is calculated using the formula mentioned above in the article (Under the heading - ‘difference between percentage and percentile’)
- Calculation of NTA score and Preparation of JEE Main Rank List: The percentile scores of different sessions calculated above are then merged and called the NTA scores. These are then used for the declaration of JEE Main final results and preparation of the overall JEE Main All India Rank (AIR) list.
