The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) is an administrative and diplomatic civil service of the executive arm of the Government of India's Central Civil Services. The Government of India founded it in October 1946. An IRS officer is one of the jobs held by members of this service. Among the other jobs are those of High Commissioner, Consul General, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, and Revenue Secretary. The administrative head is the Revenue Secretary, whereas the political leader is the Finance Minister. The officers are employed by the Union Public Service Commission of the Government of India. New IRS candidates are educated at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Revenue after completing a brief administrative course at Mussoorie's Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
Income Tax and Customs and Central Excise are two separate IRS branches. The income tax branch is controlled by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), whereas the customs and central excise branch is controlled by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC). Furthermore, IRS personnel are occasionally appointed to positions in law enforcement and intelligence institutions such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

For UPSC CSE exam eligibility, the following academic credentials are required-
For general/EWS category applicants, the minimum age is 21 years, and the maximum age is 32 years. The age restriction for SC/ST applicants is 37 years old, with an unlimited number of tries. Candidates up to the age of 35 are eligible to take the UPSC CSE test. Similarly, the age restriction varies for J&K residents, physically disabled applicants, and Defense Department candidates.
The IRS exam is divided into three parts: preliminary, main, and interview, and it is held yearly by the UPSC CSE.
The prelims test consists of two papers: General Studies and CSAT. Each paper is worth 200 points and lasts two hours. Candidates who are blind, on the other hand, get an extra 20 minutes for each paper in the preliminary test. Both papers have objective questions with multiple-choice answers. Furthermore, both publications are printed in both Hindi and English.
Candidates who pass the Prelims test advance to the Mains examination, which has a total of 1750 marks. The final candidates are chosen based on their performance in the mains and interviews. The main exam consists of nine papers. Two examinations, obligatory English and compulsory Indian language have 300 marks each and are qualifying (minimum 25% marks required), whereas the remaining papers carry 250 points. The papers in the mains are listed below-
(Marks obtained in Papers 3-9 are considered for the final merit list, and each paper contains 250 marks, so the grand total in the main exam becomes 1750 marks.)

The last stage is the interview, which is worth 275 points. Candidates who pass the Mains test are eligible for the interview stage, which is called by UPSC. The final interview stage is considerably more than only examining the applicants' academic knowledge; it also examines the candidate's whole personality. Candidates should improve on their personality, current event awareness, hobbies/interests, work experience, and educational background. Board members may ask questions about the optional subject, therefore it should be carefully prepared. Candidates are recommended to participate in multiple mock interviews to gain adequate practice, identify their weak points, and improve on them.
