IIT Full Form is Indian Institutes of Technology. In order to generate a trained workforce to assist India's economic and social growth following independence in 1947, the IITs were founded to educate scientists and engineers.

The IITs are a set of independent, prominent, engineering- and technology-focused higher education institutions. The majority of IITs were established as Institutes of National Importance by special legislation of the Indian Parliament in the early 1950s and 1960s. The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) were founded in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a result of their success.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, founded IIT Kharagpur in 1951, which became the country's first IIT. The goal was to learn to engineer and do engineering-related research. In India, formal technical education first emerged in the middle of the 19th century.
