The British government established the position of the DSP, or Assistant Commissioner of Police, in the commissionerate system with the implementation of the Indianization policy in 1876. From the beginning, it was a rank exclusive to Indians and was equated to that of an Assistant Superintendent, which at the time was a position held only by Europeans. These days, state police personnel who are part of the provincial police forces are denoted by the DSP post. They either enter at that rank directly or via departmental promotions.
Now that we have seen the DSP in its whole in English, let's examine what DSP actually means and what its capabilities are. An ACP or assistant commissioner of police are roughly similar to a DSP in official capacity. A DSP is determined using certain financial and administrative authority. The DSPs are often assigned as circle officers within a district. The rank is often commonly referred to as "Circle Officer" in the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, albeit this is technically inaccurate since the term "CO" designates a post rather than a rank. In West Bengal, a DSP is also known as an SDPO, or Sub-divisional Police Officer, because they are typically in command of a sub-division.
The government holds exams on a regular basis in order to recruit police personnel directly to this position. Additionally, after a specified number of years of service, a DSP may be promoted to an IPS officer, subject to the regulations of the individual State Governments. Typically, the duration of service ranges from 8 to 15 years.
