About Delhi University Students Union

The University of Delhi's student union is called the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU). It is the organization that speaks for the students from affiliated universities, colleges, and teaching departments. Members of the Union are the students enrolled in the teaching departments and faculties of member institutions and universities. The Union is sponsored by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi. Every year from August 16 to August 15 of the following year is the official year and term of the Union.

The budget of DUSU is roughly INR 24 lakhs. Each Union member pays a yearly subscription of Twenty INR to Union funds, which is deducted from the fees collected by the individual colleges/institutions at the time of admission. For the past eight years, DUSU President Tushar Dedha has collaborated with ABVP. In 2016, he was chosen to serve as a central councillor for Satyawati College. Tushar Dedha is viewed by senior politicians as a prospective MLA or MP. The current vice president of Delhi University Students Union is Abhi Dahiya. The Union building on the main campus of the university will house the Union's office. It will serve as its official address as well.

Delhi University Students Union Goals and Objectives

The DUSU will have the following goals and objectives

(i) To encourage communication, a democratic perspective, and a sense of unity among University of Delhi students.
(ii) To foster the academic, cultural, and social growth of University of Delhi students.
(iii) To encourage awareness of current events among University of Delhi students in order to better prepare them as informed and responsible citizens and to establish a strong student movement.
(iv) To encourage a sense of civic duty and service to the community among University of Delhi students.
(v) To encourage goodwill between all facets of the university community.
(vi) To get together, talk about, and propose issues pertaining to the students' shared interests to the university's authorities.

Delhi University Students Union Activities

DUSU (Delhi University Students Union) has the authority to arrange the following events: 

(i) Essay competitions, study groups, lectures, debates, and discussions.
(ii) Cultural events and competitions.
(iii) Indoor video gaming.
(iv) Magazine, bulletin, and wall newspaper publication.
(v) Visits and excursions to significant historical and educational sites.
(vi) Activities related to social service and relief.
(vii) The formation and management of cooperatives 
(viii) Set up a book bank and poor boys fund to assist students in need.
(ix) Any further actions that will help achieve the aforementioned goals and objectives.

Delhi University Students Union - Membership of the Union

(i) Students from a variety of colleges and institutions that the university has recognized or admitted to its privileges and who are members of the union as of the adoption of this constitution are considered members of the union.
(ii) On the final working day of July of that year, a resolution approved by the complete majority of the students enrolled in the College or Institution in question may allow its students to join the Union.
(iii) Students enrolled solely in university diploma/certificate programs or foreign language courses are not eligible to join the union.
(iv) Students who join the Union pursuant to this clause's subclauses (i) or (ii) of this clause may, on the last working day of that year, withdraw from membership by a resolution approved by the entire number of students enrolled in the College/Institution in question.
(v) Resolutions adopted by a college or institution's students under subsections (ii) or (iv) will take effect on a date that the patron will notify. A college would not be eligible for a reimbursement of its Union fund subscription if it decided to leave the Union after October 15th.

Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Elections 

Students from member colleges, university faculties, and teaching departments cast direct ballots to elect the Union. Each college or faculty students' union at a member college or university is separate. The Students' Unions of university faculties and member institutions are unified under the DUSU, an umbrella organization at the university level. The President, Vice President, Secretary, and Joint-Secretary are the four office holders of the DUSU. Additionally, DUSU is composed of one or two Central Councillors from each of the college affiliates. C.C. are chosen by the college itself. The president of each DUSU-affiliated college serves as a representative on the central council of the organization. Every year, the elections are typically held in July or August. There are 52 Delhi University colleges and faculties connected with as of 2019.

The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) is still under the control of the BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), having won three out of four slots three times in a row.  Tushar Dedha of the ABVP was chosen as president, Aparajita as secretary, and Sachin Baisla as joint secretary in the results that were released on Saturday night. Vice-president Abhi Dahiya of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), which is supported by the Congress, was elected. On Friday, 52 colleges and departments on the North and South campuses participated in polling for the four important DUSU positions.

Guidelines For The Conduct of DUSU Elections 2024

Following are the guidelines for DUSU elections -

 1. If a candidate is running for office-bearers of the Union, they cannot enter any college or hostel property to conduct canvassing without presenting valid identification, such as an Identity Slip or College Identity Card issued by the Office of the Chief Election Officer.
2. The DUSU Elections will be canvassed from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A maximum of 04 (four) legitimate students will be present for each candidate during their campus/college canvassing.
3. While canvassing in a college or hostel, each candidate's supporter, if any, should also be carrying his or her college identity card. Campaign supporters who do not hold a DUSU membership will not be permitted entry into the College, Department, or Institution.
4. A candidate may visit a college, institution, or department at a designated time to meet and speak with students, as announced by the principal of the college or the head of the department. Enough exposure could be provided for this so that the students and applicants are aware of the arrangements.
