What is Concave Mirror?

A concave mirror has a reflective surface that curves inward and away from the light source. Light is directed inward by concave mirrors to a single focal point. Contrary to convex mirrors, a concave mirror's image is dependent on the separation between the object and the mirror.

What are Lenses?

  • Lenses are spherical materials with one or more spherical surfaces. The two types of lenses bounded by two spherical surfaces are convex lenses (or converging lenses) and concave lenses (or diverging lenses).

What is Concave Lens?

A concave lens diverts a straight light beam from the source, resulting in a diminished, upright virtual image.

  • It can generate both real and virtual images.
  • On the inside, concave lenses have at least one curved surface.
  • A diverging lens is a concave lens that is shaped round inwards at the center and bulges outwards through the edges, causing light to diverge.
  • They are used to treat myopia by making distant objects appear smaller than they are.

Uses of Concave Lens

infinity
  • Used in Telescope
  • Concave lenses are used in telescopes and binoculars to magnify objects.
  • Used in Eye Glasses
  • Concave lenses are commonly used to correct myopia, also known as near-sightedness.
  • Used in Peepholes
  • Peepholes, also known as door viewers, are security devices that provide a 360-degree view of objects outside walls or doors.

Image Formation by Concave Lens

Image formation with a concave lens can be demonstrated by:

The position of the object placed

The position of the image formed

The nature of the image formed

The relative size of the image formed

At infinity

At the first focus, F1

Virtual and erect image

Highly diminished, point-sized image

Between infinity and the optical center O

Between the first focus, F1, and the optical center O

Virtual and erect image

Diminished image

Image Formation in Concave Lens cases: When the Object is placed at Infinity

infinity

In this case,

  • The image formed by the concave lens will be at the first focus, F1, when the object is placed at infinity.
  • The image obtained will be virtual in nature and will be in erect form.
  • In addition, the size of the formed image will be greatly reduced, similar to the size of a point.
  • The image is erect.

Image Formation by Concave Lens: When the object is placed between the lens's optical center (O) and Infinity.

infinity

In this case,

  • The image formed by the concave lens will be between the first focus, F1, and the optical center O when the object is placed between infinity and the optical center O.
  • The image obtained will be virtual in nature and will be in erect form.
  • In addition, the size of the image formed will be reduced.

Things to Remember

  • A concave lens diverges a beam from the source, resulting in a reduced, upright virtual image.
  • A diverging lens is also known as a concave lens.
  • Concave lenses are used in telescopes, peepholes, and eyeglasses.
  • A concave lens has thicker edges and a thinner center.
  • The image magnification can be calculated as M=hi/h0 = v/u.
  • A concave lens has the formula 1/f=1/v +1/u.
  • When an object is placed at infinity, a virtual image is formed at the focus.
  • When an object is placed at a specific distance from the concave lens, a virtual image is formed between the focus and the optical center.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is image formation in lens?

A virtual image is formed between the optical center and the focus of the convex lens when an object is placed at a finite distance from the lens. The image size is smaller than the object size.

What is the image formed by concave lens?

A virtual image is always formed by a concave lens.

What is another name for Concave lens?

The diverging lens is another name for a concave lens.

What type of image is formed by a Concave lens?

A concave lens produces a vertically inward, real or virtual, and always diminished image.

What happens when we look through a lens which is a concave lens?

A concave lens causes light rays to diverge in parallel and spread out so that they appear to come from a point behind the lens that is the focal point. The focal length of a lens is defined as the distance between the center of the lens and a focal point.
